Rethink Food is a nonprofit organization founded in 2017 with the mission to create a more sustainable and equitable food system. By partnering with restaurants and food establishments, Rethink Food repurposes excess food to prepare nutritious, culturally celebrated meals for communities facing food insecurity, distributing over 40,000 meals per week across New York City and Miami at no cost to recipients.


How everything started
Q: How did the business begin?
Anna: “Rethink Food was founded in 2017 by Matt Jozwiak, our CEO. He started as a dishwasher and worked his way up through the restaurant industry, witnessing firsthand the tension between food waste and food insecurity. He saw how much food was wasted in restaurants while walking home and noticing people who didn’t have enough to eat. This inspired him to create an organization that could address both issues.”
Q: What do you think made Rethink Food successful as a business?
Anna: “Our quick response during the pandemic was pivotal. In 2020, we adapted rapidly to the challenges posed by food insecurity and the collapsing restaurant industry. We partnered with restaurants like Eleven Madison Park, transforming them into community kitchens to provide meals to those in need while also supporting the service industry. This holistic, collaborative approach—working with restaurants, community-based organizations, and even small mom-and-pop shops—has been key to our success. It’s about addressing multiple needs simultaneously and staying adaptable to whatever challenges come our way.”
Q: When was your proudest moment?
Anna: “I think our proudest moment was in 2020 during the pandemic. Rethink had been working hard to establish itself since 2017, but in 2020, we showed how quickly and effectively we could respond to a crisis. We worked closely with our restaurant partners and community-based organizations, ensuring everyone stayed healthy while addressing unprecedented levels of food insecurity, fear, and uncertainty. From seemingly nothing, we built a response model that not only met the immediate needs but also became a catalyst for what Rethink Food is today—a model of adaptability and collaboration that continues to guide us in responding to crises.”
