Search the Shopify App Store for SEO and you’ll get hundreds of results, most of them promising to “boost your rankings” with no explanation of what they actually do. A fair number duplicate something Shopify already does for free, and a few add enough script to the theme that they cost you more in page speed than they return in optimization.
This is a sorting guide. It covers which jobs benefit from software, which tools do those jobs, what they cost as of October 2026, and what a small store can skip entirely. Prices move, so treat every figure here as a starting point and check the listing before you subscribe.
Two companions to this post: the fixes themselves, what to change and in what order, are in our guide to Shopify SEO steps and costs, and the platform-agnostic background is in what e-commerce SEO is and how it works.
The Bottom Line
- Shopify already generates your
sitemap.xml,robots.txt, canonical tags, SSL, and product structured data, so don’t pay an app for those (Shopify Help Center).- Google Search Console is free and more useful than any paid app. Install it before considering anything else.
- Apps earn their fee on repetition: bulk meta editing, automatic image compression, and redirect management across hundreds of products.
- A workable paid stack costs $15 to $50 a month. Research platforms like Semrush and Ahrefs start around $129 to $139 a month and are overkill for most small stores.
- Every app adds script to your theme. Audit what you’ve installed once a quarter and remove what you’ve stopped using.

What Shopify already handles, so you don’t buy it twice
Before installing anything, know what the platform does on its own. Shopify’s documentation states that auto-generated canonical tags are added to prevent duplicate content, sitemap.xml and robots.txt are generated automatically, themes produce title tags that include your store name, SSL is on by default, and structured data for products is built into themes (Shopify Help Center).
So any app whose pitch is “generates your sitemap” or “adds SSL” is selling you something you have. The same documentation lists what remains yours: editing titles, meta descriptions, and URLs, writing image alt text, producing content, monitoring performance, and setting up redirects. That list is the real market for Shopify SEO tools.
Google Search Console: the free tool that matters most
Search Console is Google’s own report on how your store performs in search: which queries you appear for, your average position, which pages are indexed, and what’s broken. It costs nothing and no paid app replaces it, because no third party has Google’s data about your own site.
The single highest-value use of it for a small store: filter to queries where your average position is between 11 and 20. Those are pages sitting just off page one. Improving one of them is usually faster than creating anything new.
Pair it with PageSpeed Insights, also free, for a phone-first read on how slow your product pages really are.
Shopify SEO apps worth paying for
Apps earn their money on volume. Doing one product by hand is five minutes; doing four hundred is a week you don’t have.
| Tool | What it does | Price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Query, position, and indexing data straight from Google | Free |
| Yoast SEO for Shopify | Real-time on-page feedback, SEO templates, schema, AI-written titles and meta descriptions | $19 per 30 days ex VAT, 14-day free trial |
| TinySEO (formerly TinyIMG) | Automatic image compression, alt text, asset preloading | Free to install with 50 images a month; Beginner $14/mo, Advanced $23/mo, Expert $49/mo |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Desktop crawler for broken links, redirect chains, duplicate titles | Free to 500 URLs; $279/year unlimited |
| Semrush | Keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking | SEO plan $139/mo, or $117.33/mo billed annually |
| Ahrefs | Backlink and keyword research, site audit | Starter $29/mo, Lite $129/mo, Standard $249/mo |
On-page editing and templates
The repetitive job on any store is titles and meta descriptions across hundreds of products. Yoast SEO for Shopify is the best-known option here: it gives real-time SEO and readability feedback while you edit products and collections, applies templates so a catalog stays consistent, adds structured data for products, pricing, stock, and reviews, and can generate titles and meta descriptions with AI. It lists at $19 per 30 days excluding VAT, with a 14-day free trial and twelve months for the price of ten on annual billing (Yoast).
Several Shopify-native alternatives cover similar ground. Avada SEO Suite, Smart SEO, and SEO Manager mostly offer a free tier plus paid plans in roughly the $10 to $35 a month band. Check current pricing in each listing, because these tiers change more often than the bigger platforms’ do.
Images and page speed
Image weight is the most common speed problem on a Shopify store, because product photography goes up straight from a camera or a supplier. TinySEO, which rebranded from TinyIMG, compresses images automatically, handles alt text, and preloads assets. It’s free to install with 50 images a month and 3¢ per image after that, with plans at $14, $23, and $49 a month (TinySEO).
This job is worth automating precisely because it never ends. Every new product adds more images, and manual compression is the task everyone abandons first.
Crawling and technical checks
Screaming Frog’s SEO Spider is a desktop crawler, not an app, and it’s the quickest way to find broken links, redirect chains, missing titles, and duplicate meta descriptions across a whole store. The free version crawls 500 URLs, which covers a small catalog entirely; a licence is $279 a year for unlimited crawling (Screaming Frog).
For most stores this is a quarterly tool rather than a daily one, which makes the free tier sufficient for a long time.
Keyword and competitor research
Semrush and Ahrefs are the two serious research platforms. Semrush’s SEO plan is $139 a month, discounted to $117.33 billed annually, with higher tiers at $199, $299, and $549 (Semrush). Ahrefs runs a $29 Starter plan with Lite at $129, Standard at $249, and Advanced at $449 (Ahrefs).
Be honest about whether you need this. These platforms are built for people doing SEO all day. If your keyword list is thirty terms a florist or caterer already hears from customers, a month’s subscription to validate volumes and then cancelling is a perfectly reasonable use of them.
Shopify SEO tools a small store can skip
- Anything promising “instant rankings” or guaranteed positions. Nobody can guarantee a position, and the apps that imply it tend to be thin wrappers on free data.
- Second and third apps doing the same job. Two schema apps will fight each other and can produce duplicate structured data.
- Broken-link monitors, if you’re already running a quarterly crawl. The crawl finds the same things.
- AI content generators bolted into an SEO app. Bulk-generated product descriptions are exactly the near-duplicate text that fails to rank in the first place. If you do draft with AI, treat the output as a first pass to rewrite in your own voice. Tools like Superhumanizer exist for that clean-up step, but the words still have to say something only your store knows.
- Rank trackers, early on. Search Console shows your average position for free, and watching daily rank movement on a new store mostly produces anxiety.
Building a Shopify SEO stack at three budgets
$0 a month. Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, Screaming Frog’s free tier, and Shopify’s built-in editing fields. This covers a store with under a hundred products. Most owners never exhaust what’s possible here.
About $20 a month. Add one on-page app with templates and bulk editing, plus automated image compression if your catalog grows faster than you can hand-compress it. This is the sweet spot for a store with a few hundred SKUs.
$150 and up. Add a research platform when you’re actively competing for terms rather than just claiming the obvious ones, and when someone is going to use it weekly. If you’re spending at this level, compare it honestly against hiring help; how to choose an e-commerce SEO agency covers what that costs and when it’s the better buy.
Whatever you install, audit it quarterly. Apps leave script behind in the theme even after uninstalling, and a store that’s accumulated three years of abandoned tools is slower than it needs to be for no return at all.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free Shopify SEO tool?
Google Search Console, by a distance. It’s the only source of your real query and position data, it’s free, and it’s the first thing to set up on a new store. Screaming Frog’s free 500-URL crawl is the best free companion for technical checks.
Do Shopify SEO apps actually improve rankings?
Not directly. They make the work faster and more consistent at bulk editing, compression, and schema, and those things can improve rankings. An app installed and left alone changes nothing.
How many SEO apps should a Shopify store run?
One or two. Overlapping apps duplicate structured data, conflict over the same meta fields, and each one adds script that slows the store down.
Is Semrush or Ahrefs worth it for a small Shopify store?
Usually not as a permanent subscription. At $129 to $139 a month for an entry plan, the cost is hard to justify against a keyword list you could build from customer emails. A single month to validate your terms, then cancel, is a reasonable compromise.
